We understand that you may not always have documents available.

• You can speak to staff, who will ask a few simple questions to confirm your eligibility. 

For college students (shared accommodation) 

If you are eligible under the college student criteria, you should: 

• Be living away from your family home, and 

• Be living in shared accommodation 

This will normally be confirmed through a few brief verbal questions if you don’t have any documentary evidence. 

There are two licensed MenB vaccines: 
– Bexsero® (used in NHS Scotland programmes) 
– Trumenba® (not routinely used in the UK but may be given in specific circumstances or privately) 
 
For this programme, you will receive Bexsero®, usually given as an injection in the upper arm. 

 You need 2 doses of Bexsero® for protection against meningitis and sepsis. 
– The second dose must be given at least 28 days after the first dose. 
– Both doses are important — one dose alone does not give full protection. 

You may already have had the MenACWY vaccine, which protects against different strains of meningitis. 
It does not protect against MenB, so you should still take up this offer.

Yes. If you miss your appointment: 

• Rebook through the clinic links on www.grampianvax.com/menb 

• Remember if it is your second dose there must be at least 28 days since your first dose

No – This is a time-limited offer (with first doses offered until 31st December 2026 and second doses offered until 31st March 2027), to facilitate provision of two doses for everyone eligible. 

You should have both doses before starting university or college, where possible, to ensure the best protection.

Trumenba®

If you have had 1 dose of Trumenba®, or 2 doses delivered less than 6 months apart you can start the Start Bexsero®  2 dose schedule now.  You will receive your second dose of Bexsero® no less than 28 days after you have received your 1st dose.  

Bexsero®

• If you have had 1 dose of Bexsero®  you are eligible to receive a second dose a minimum of 28 days after the first dose 
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero®  less than 5 years ago you do not require any further vaccination for MenB. 
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero®  5 or more years ago you are eligible to receive 1 further dose of Bexsero®   

DO NOT BOOK YOUR SECOND APPOINTMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED YOUR FIRST DOSE 

Like all medicines, vaccines can cause side effects. This is normal but not everyone gets them. After the vaccine, you might: 

• have a sore arm 
• have redness or swelling where you had the injection 
• have a headache 
• feel sick 
• feel tired 
• muscle and joint aches 

These effects usually disappear after a day or two. 

Some people experience uncommon side effects. These can include: 

• a high temperature 
• a rash 
• fainting 
• a seizure 

These reactions are uncommon, and the risk to your health from meningococcal disease itself is far higher than the risk of a rarer side effect following vaccination. These side effects usually disappear after a day or two.

If you turn 25 years of age between 06/07/2026 and 31/12/2026 and are joining university for the first time in academic year 2026-27 you are eligible.

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria you can receive the vaccine through the NHS programme. Please bring proof of your first dose to your appointment.  

There are 2 licensed MenB vaccines Bexsero® (manufactured by GSK) and Trumenba® (manufactured by Pfizer).  Trumenba® vaccine is not routinely given in the UK but is sometimes given to contacts of a case and it may also be obtained privately or have been administered to individuals coming to the UK from another country. 

Please read the information below.  

Trumenba® Vaccination 

• If you have had 1 dose of Trumenba®, or 2 doses delivered less than 6 months apart you can start the Start Bexsero®   2 dose schedule now.  You will receive your second dose of Bexsero® no less than 28 days after you have received your 1st dose.  
• If you had 2 or 3 doses of Trumenba®, (complete course) 5 or more years ago, you are now eligible for 2 doses of Bexsero® at least 28 days apart. 
• If you have had 2 or 3 doses of Trumenba®, (complete course) less than 5 years ago you do not require further vaccination for MenB. 

Bexsero® Vaccination 

• If you have had 1 dose of Bexsero®   you are eligible to receive a second dose a minimum of 28 days after the first dose 
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero®  less than 5 years ago you do not require any further vaccination for MenB. 
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero®  5 or more years ago you are eligible to receibe 1 further dose of Bexsero®   

This is dependent on the vaccine you have received. 

Trumenba®

If you have had 1 dose of Trumenba®, or 2 doses delivered less than 6 months apart you can start the Start Bexsero®  2 dose schedule now. You will receive your second dose of Bexsero® no less than 28 days after you have received your 1st dose.  

Bexsero®

• If you have had 1 dose of Bexsero®  you are eligible to receive a second dose a minimum of 28 days after the first dose 
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero® 5 or more years ago you are eligible to receive 1 further dose of Bexsero®   
• If you have had 2 doses of Bexsero®  less than 5 years ago you do not require any further vaccination for MenB. 

No – this programme is only for those who are starting university for the first time in 2026-27 

The following groups are not eligible for this programme: 

• those aged less than 25 years, who are not entering university or living away from home in shared student accommodation at college for the first time from the academic year 2026/27, and fall outside the current S6 age group specified above.  

• postgraduate students who will, by definition, not be entering university or college for the first time in the academic year 2026/27 as they will have completed undergraduate courses previously.  

• those who have completed a 2-dose course of Bexsero® within the last 5 years.  

• those who have completed a 2-dose course (provided those doses were given at least 6 months apart) or 3-dose course of Trumenba® within the last 5 years. 

We are aware that the MenB vaccine may be offered privately, outside the routine NHS vaccination programme, by some pharmacies and other providers.  

Private sales of vaccines are managed by arrangements between pharmacy companies and vaccine manufacturers and are not controlled or managed by NHS Scotland. 

Seek urgent medical help if you notice: 

• High fever 
• Severe headache or stiff neck 
• Sensitivity to light 
• Vomiting or confusion 
• A rash that does not fade
